We Minecrafted the Picture House! Would you like to try?
This evening we had our last session of the Minecrafting the Picture House project!
Over the past two months, young people aged 9 – 13 have been coming together to learn about the architecture of the Picture House, the arrival of early cinema in Campbeltown and explore ideas for events and displays.
Front elevation of Campbeltown Picture House as drawn by architect Albert Victor Gardner in 1912.
The Minecraft Team continued to work on the Picture House from the original architectural plans, putting the roof on, building the “wee hooses” and installing atmospheric lighting.
The entrance, complete with balcony and architectural features, including the “hat shaped” roof above pillars and coloured tiles.
“I found my experience with this project intriguing and very enjoyable. I thoroughly enjoyed looking through all the old photos and plans and using them as a guide for our finished minecraft model.” – Reece
The box office facing the front entrance. Liking the popcorn dispenser and columns!
The screen, auditorium lighting inspired by Thos. Fairlie & Co., cloud patterned ceiling and a start on the wee hooses!
“I found the creation of the cinema fun interesting and most of all educational, I learned a lot about the history of the cinema and really enjoyed making our to scale model of the cinema in minecraft.” – Aaron
The view from the balcony. We didn’t have time to build a harbour, but who knows what could happen in the future?
We also put the finishing touches to a Picture House mascot, Clementina (or Casablanca) the Cat, and started to create a “find the mice” trail around the Picture House. Brilliant idea, we just hope they aren’t replaced by real mice when it opens!
Think you have what it takes!?
