Life story in a paragraph (summary of above) | William’s early years were spent in Stewarton, where his Father had a Grocer Shop. When his Father retired, he lived in the villa “Craiglussa” at Machrihanish. Longrow Distillery was founded in 1824 and was owned by John Beith &Co. From 1852 it was owned by Colvill, Beith & Co. In 1887, William Greenlees and his brother James Greenlees took over. The distillery closed in 1896. In 1897, William had a villa built on Kilkerran Road. “Redcliff” was designed by H. E. Clifford. When he died, he left £500 to his Housekeeper, £300 to his house servant and £250 to his Nephew. He owned a half share in his brother James’s business “Bennet & Co” which he signed over to him on his death. The rest of his estate was divided between his siblings: John, James, Archibald, Jessie and Catherine. | ||
